Abstract
A cross-power spectral method is described for the separation of the scanning system noise spectrum from the film noise spectrum in a film measuring system. This method provides a more accurate way to measure the true film noise spectrum. The spectral separation is done in two steps: (1) Two samples are taken at each sample position on the film to produce a pair of independently sampled data arrays. (2) The cross-power spectrum is then computed from this pair of arrays using the fast Fourier transforin(FFT) technique. Since film noise and scanner noise are uncorrelated, it is shown that this cross-power spectrum is an estimate of the film noise spectrum. The use of this technique is demonstrated using simulated film data.
