Abstract
We present a simple finite-difference scheme for solution of nonlinear coupled evolution equations that describe propagation of optical pulses under the slowly-varying envelope approximation. The scheme is based on upwind differencing and enables inclusion of various nonlinear effects. For the analysis we use examples of Kerr-nonlinear structures: waveguide directional coupler and channel dropping filter consisting of coupled microring resonators. Generalization to the more complex systems is straightforward. We study accuracy and stability of the scheme, demonstrate typical features, and comparison with other techniques.
