Abstract
This work reports the fabrication of asymmetric fiber tapers using a pulsed CO2 laser as a heat source. The laser has its beam focused on the side of the fiber by using a moveable mirror and a convergent lens while the softened fiber is stretched by a translation stage. The tapering process uses a superposition of step tapers that are produced after sweeping the laser spot over a previously calculated length of the fiber. Constant speeds in all the translation stages are used in the process. A pulsed laser source with a low cost power control is also used to fabricate asymmetric tapers having a relatively low loss.
