Abstract
A large number of remote sensing studies in the Netherlands are performed using airborne sensors. At the present moment, a multitude of different sensors are available, covering a wide variety of application purposes. At NLR it was found that artificial intelligence techniques are extremely useful in the preprocessing of remote sensing images, this in addition to the widely accepted use of artificial intelligence in image understanding, once the actual processing has taken place. An expert system is being developed to assist users in selecting the best signal processing algorithms with respect to sensor and use of the data under consideration. Insight will be given in the advantages of the use of expert systems in preprocessing digital images. Also the first experiences with the realized system will be discussed.
