Abstract
Color image processing can be made much less complicated and more time-efficient, if color images can be specified in terms of color attributes, namely, hue, saturation, and intensity (HSI). These attributes are the closest approximation to human interpretation of color, simply because they are products of human perception. Converting color images into hue, saturation, and intensity, can be done by compute-intensive algorithms executed on software or on single plug-in cards, both available for personal computers. The major benefit of HSI is its compatibility with monochrome techniques techniques currently available. HSI builds on programs made to date for black and white image processing applications. Monochrome techniques are intensity-related operations, thus being fully portable. Also, because the attributes are independent, HSI processing is just as fast and straightforward as monochrome processing, while allowing programmers a choice in color processing.
