Abstract
This chapter will discuss the performance of the human visual system (HVS). The discussion begins with a brief description of the visual system, followed by performance data on the HVS. Performance is discussed in terms of the observer’s ability to see small and low-contrast image detail, as well as the ability to detect and describe color differences.
Individuals differ in terms of their visual abilities, and abilities change as people age. Knowledge of these differences and changes is important for optimizing a display. Theoretical and empirical models designed to predict the performance of the HVS can optimize the setup of displays, and are described here in that context.
