1 November 1999 Performance of multichannel heterodyne continuous-phase frequency shift keying system including the effect of chromatic dispersion

The performance of a multichannel optical heterodyne continuous-phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK) system is analyzed under the combined influence of receiver shot and thermal noises, interference from adjacent channels and fiber chromatic dispersion. The bit error rate characteristics of the system are evaluated using the frequency domain analysis assuming a Gaussian crosstalk probability density function. The sensitivity penalty due to crosstalk interference is observed to increase when the effect of fiber chromatic dispersion is present. It thus requires a larger channel separation to overcome the performance degradation due to dispersion. The channel separation requirements with various values of intermediate frequency (IF), IF bandwidth and modulation index are determined so that the transmission capacity of the multichannel system can be depicted.
