1 June 2002 New type of retroreflective film formed by laser-generating glass beads

Optical element arrays act as retroreflectors and have the pseudoconjugate property. A bead array is one type of optical element arrays that is widely used in displays, ranging targets, and traffic signs. In view of the diffraction effect, larger glass beads should be better for far field than the smaller ones usually used. We use a CO2 laser beam to produce these beads. To increase the retroreflective efficiency and answer the concern in cases of the near and far field, we propose and realize the technology of inlaying small beads into large beads. The experimental results show that our new film is superior to existing commercial retroreflective films. It displays industrial prospects in related applications.
