To achieve precise energy distribution among light beams diffracted by a rough surface-relief grating in optical pickup heads, we model the grating with a scalar theory. The grating is assumed to be a trapezoid shape with different roughnesses for the top and the bottom surfaces. The model includes rectangle, triangle, and sawtooth shapes as special cases. Using this model, we investigate the influence of grating parameters on diffraction efficiencies and deduce Strehl ratios for different surface roughness values.
