We investigate the use of optical systems consisting of either one or two refractive microlens arrays, a collimating and Fourier transforming lens for LED beam homogenization. Due to the small lenslet diameters, diffraction can lead to significant deviations from the desired homogene intensity distribution. Therefore, we analyze the two setups applying scalar diffraction theory and explain the occurring effects using numerical calculations. Our theoretical calculations are supported by experimental results.
