1 March 2004 Hybrid wavelength-division-multiplexing system based on a broadband amplified spontaneous emmission optical source

A hybrid wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) system based on a broadband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) optical source for CATV, 256-QAM, and OC-48 transport is proposed and demonstrated. The proposed hybrid WDM system uses four spectrum-sliced wavelengths to transmit 111 AM-VSB channels, 4 256-QAM digital passband channels, and 1 OC-48 digital baseband channel simultaneously. Since our proposed system does not use multiple distributed feedback (DFB) laser diodes, it reveals a prominent one with simpler and more economic advantages than that of traditional hybrid WDM systems.
