Abstract
We propose a technique of applying the prism-coupler method for accurate measurement of the effective indices of channel waveguides, which can have step- or graded-index profiles. The technique involves coupling light from a prism into an array of waveguides, varying the angle between the prism axis and the array axis, and curve fitting of the measurement data. We demonstrate the technique with arrays of polymer waveguides and ion-exchanged glass waveguides.
