SC141: Optical Interferometry in Astronomy
Interferometric techniques are at the forefront of modern astronomical instrumentation. For large ground-based telescopes, they are used to overcome the blurring effects of the Earth's atmosphere and allow the telescope diffraction limit to be reached. The same techniques allow telescopes to be linked to produce extremely high angular resolution data. New generations of instruments are or will be operating at the VLT and Keck interferometers for the detection of extra-solar planets.
