This paper demonstrates significant improvement in line detection using hyperspectral data compared to panchromatic data in natural scenes. Improvements in the number of lines detected using a Hough transform vary between 50% and over 400% for two AVIRIS and two HYDICE scenes. This enhanced detection is expected because hyperspectral data preserves gradient information that is lost in the inherent averaging across spectral bands for panchromatic imagery. For the same computational complexity per band, hyperspectral line detection is shown to outperform panchromatic line detection.
