Mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR, λ = 3 – 5 μm) materials are of great importance due to their applications in optical sensors and devices for military, industry, and non-invasive medical diagnostics. Specifically, MWIR polarimetry are used in biometric recognition and camouflaged detection. Recently, sulfur based organically modified chalcogenides (ORMOCHALC) polymers have been utilized to fabricate MWIR polarizers with competitive extinction coefficient to commercial polarizers, which are mostly made of expensive, brittle, and heavy inorganic materials. On the other hand, to adjust or reinforce the refractive index of the polymer, the chalcogenide content (i.e., sulfur, selenium) needs to be increased, which may result in adverse effects on the thermomechanical characteristics, including Young's modulus and lower glass transition temperature. This reduced thermomechanical stability compromises the structural integrity of ORMOCHALC-based optical devices. In this study, an ORMOCHALC polymer, poly(S–r–DIB), was reinforced with the zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanoparticles to simultaneously improve the refractive index and the thermomechanical properties. The addition of 20 wt% ZnS nanoparticles improves the pure polymer's glass transition temperature (T_g) from 9.6 °C to 31.4 °C, and the refractive index by Δn= 6.58 %. Then, subwavelength wire-grid polarizers were fabricated based on the pure ORMOCHALC first by a simple thermal imprinting method followed by metal deposition. The resulted MWIR polarizer showed a high extinction coefficient which is comparable with commercial polarizers. However, the structural integrity of the polarizers was compromised due to lower glass transition temperature. Finally, finite element analysis was conducted on the possible wire-grid polarizer fabrication utilizing optically and mechanically reinforced composites, as demonstrated in this study. If fabricated, these nanoparticles reinforced polarizers will possess superior structural integrity compared to ORMOCHALC polarizers. Moreover, these polarizers show a spectral selectivity as the transmission curve's resonance wavelength depends on the composite's refractive index, which is tunable by controlling the nanoparticles content. The resonance peak redshifted from 3.12 μm to 3.3 μm for the pure polymer to 20% ZnS reinforced ORMOCHALC polarizer. The extinction coefficient of the polarizer also improved in multiple wavelength bands in the MWIR. These polarizers with superior extinction coefficient, spectral selectivity, and improved thermomechanical stability demonstrate a broader prospect in MWIR optics.

Skin cancer, in all its various forms has been identified by the American Cancer Society as the most common form of cancer in both the United States and worldwide. In fact, more Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer than all other forms of cancer combined. Typically, initial skin cancer diagnosis relies on the asymmetry, border, core, diameter, and evolution (ABCDE) test. As a subjective test, the ABCDE method relies on the skill of the practitioner to provide an accurate diagnosis. Therefore, a diagnostic instrument that could be used as an initial screening tool to determine whether a skin lesion is potentially cancerous would have significant application. This need is especially acute in under-served communities without ready-access to skilled practitioners. It also could have widespread applicability at the point-of-care to reduce the strain on clinical dermatologists. We have recently demonstrated preliminary results showing the capability to discriminate between healthy skin and cancerous lesions using an infrared method inspired by human color vision. This technique relies on identifying variations in the infrared (IR) spectra of healthy and cancerous tissue; however, unlike standard IR-spectroscopic sensing methods it does not require the use of a spectrometer. Rather, this approach utilizes the response through three IR optical filters; similar to the method that human eye uses to discriminate between hundreds of thousands of colors in the natural world. Here, we report on calculated studies demonstrating the selectivity of this approach for various types of cancerous lesions including melanomas. We explore various potential optical filter sets to discriminate not only between healthy and cancerous tissue, but also to determine whether it may be possible to discriminate between various types of melanoma lesions using this bioinspired method. These results demonstrate that this approach has potential as a low-cost, widely deployed sensing method for detection of cancerous skin lesions, prior to examination by a trained specialist.

High intensity nanosecond laser pulses induce damage on uncoated optics and antireflection (AR) coated optics with thin film boundaries. Structured surfaces with AR performance have shown higher damage resistance than conventional AR coatings. This work explores laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of random antireflective surface structures (rARSS), covering interfaces of planar fused silica substrates, using a 7 ± 1 nanosecond duration, single damaging pulse at 1064-nm wavelength. The rARSS treated windows were optimized for AR at 1064 nm, and transmittance of each treated interface was increased by 3.2% per ISO 13697. Incident fluence was controlled near LIDT for both entry and exit sides. Multiple locations were tested for each fluence setting in accordance with ISO 21254 1-on-1 LIDT testing. Double-sided and single-sided rARSS, orientation with both entrance-side and exit-side treatments, were tested to determine effects random structures have in damage induced by field enhancement on the exit side. Results show that rARSS on a single side of an optic have higher resistance to onset of laser damage when located at entry (structured) side. All tests resulting in damage of polished and single-sided rARSS oriented on exit side were ballistic on beam exit facet, showing surface cracks. Results from rARSS located on beam entry side (both single- and double-side treated) showed nonballistic damage and densification of rARSS features from localized melting or reflow, capping the rARSS but still preserving effective-gradient index and rARSS transmission enhancement. This suggests that the localized melting of the rARSS optic surface does not constitute damage optically, or at least not catastrophically within the prebulk damage regime. Therefore, it is possible to foresee the onset of true damage within an optical system via tracking transmission drop, and swap optics out before catastrophic system failure. The drop in transmission acts as an early warning system, making these rARSS optics an invaluable tool in high-energy laser development.

Nanosecond duration, high intensity and high average power laser pulses induce damage on uncoated optics, due to localized field enhancement at the exit surface of the components. Anti-reflection (AR) coated optics, due to their (multiple) thin film boundaries, have similar field enhancement regions, which lead to laser damage on both entry and exit sides. Nano-scale structured optical interfaces with AR performance (ARSS) have been widely demonstrated, and found to have higher laser damage resistance than conventional AR coatings. Comprehensive tests of optical entry and exit structured-surface laser damage using nanosecond pulses for ARSS are not widely available. We measured the laser damage of random anti-reflective surface structures (rARSS), on planar, optical quality, fused silica substrates, using single 6-8ns duration pulses at 1064 nm wavelength. The single-sided rARSS substrates were optimized for Fresnel reflectance suppression at 1064 nm, and the measured transmittance at normal incidence was increased by 3.2%, with a possible theoretical maximum of 3.5%. The high energy laser beam was focused to increase the incident intensity, in order to probe values above and below the damage thresholds reported in the literature. The source laser Q-switch durations were used to directly control incident fluence. Multiple locations were tested for each Q-switch setting, to build a statistical relationship between the fluence and damaging events. Single-sided, AR random surface structured substrates were tested, using entry and exit side orientations, to determine any effects the random structures may have in the damage induced by the field enhancement on the exit side. We found that the AR randomly structured surfaces have a higher resistance, to the onset of laser damage, when they are located at the entry (structured) side of the substrates. In comparison, when the same AR random structures are in the beam exit side of the substrates, the onset of laser damage occurs at lower fluence values. All tests resulting in damage of the optical-quality polished fused silica substrates, and those with the structures on the exit side of the samples, are ballistic in nature, showing surface cracks and outward-directed debris craters, all occurring at the beam exit facet. Of interest are the results from tests completed with the rARSS located on the beam entry side; the damage caused by these tests was not typically ballistic in nature (inward directed craters) and occurred on the structured side of the samples.
