Joel Pedro Carvalho was born in 3rd April 1979 in Porto. He currently is a PhD student in Physics, in Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. In December 2007 he got his MSc degree in Electrical and Computers Engineering with a Specialization on Optical Communications and Technologies, in the Faculty of Engineer. He works as a researcher in the Optoelectronics and Electronics Unit of INESC Porto since 2002, which is also the year of his graduation in Electrical and Computers Engineering. He worked in the NextGenPCF (next generation photonic crystal fibres) and FIDELIO (Fiber laser development for next generation lidar onboard detection system) European Commission financed projects. Previously he was directly involved in several developments related with the following Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology financed projects: RUMO (optical fibre laser research for environmental monitoring), OFILTRO (optical filtering for dwdm networks) and WIDCOM (wide band optical fibre amplifier for dense wavelength division multiplexed networks). He is co-author of two patents, 10 papers in international journals and 34 papers in national and international conferences.
