Professor Joel Villatoro received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in optics from the National Institute for Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics, Puebla, Mexico, in 1995 and 1999, respectively. He is currently Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU. Prior to that, he was Research Fellow in Industrial Photonics at Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies, Birmingham, UK, Ramon y Cajal Researcher at the world-famous ICFO –Institute of Photonic Sciences, Barcelona, Spain, and Research Scientist at the Centro de Investigaciones en Optica A.C., Leon, Mexico. He is the author of 125 scientific publications and of 7 patents, and has supervised or co-supervised 3 Master, 5 PhD students, and 2 Post-doctoral FellowS. His contributions to his field are acknowledged as he has a growing number of citations (+4600 citations until now), an h-factor of 39 and has given around 25 invited talks at international events. He has been PI of several research projects related to optical sensing and fibre devices.
