Profile Summary

Rainer Leitgeb finished his PhD in Theoretical Physics at the Technical University of Vienna in1998. In 1998 he joined the department of Medical Physics where he achieved his habilitation to become associate professor at the Medical University of Vienna in 2004. In 2007 he received the ARVO/Alcon early career clinician research award. From 2004 to 2007 he was invited to the EPFL Lausanne to join the Laboratoire d'Optique Biomedical where he was leading the research in Coherent Optics, in particular of Optical Coherence Tomography. After his sabbatical he returned to the Medical University in Vienna Austria, leading his research group in biomedical optics. His current research focuses on functional imaging techniques, in particular functional extensions of optical coherence tomography and advanced microscopy, as well on methods of holographic image reconstruction and wavefront engineering. He is author of more than 100 publications, being cited more than 4000 times, and authored several patens in the field of optical coherence tomography. He is member of the editorial board of Optics Letters and of the International Journal of Optics, being actively involved in conference organization as committee member, and conference chair, and serving as reviewer for highly ranked journals. He is expert evaluator for projects of the European Commission as well as NIH and NCI.
