Sawsan Abdul-Majid , received M.Sc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Varna University, Bulgaria, in 1984 and 1992 respectively. In 1993, she joined the Faculty of Engineering at 7th of April University in Libya,
In 1999-2003 she worked as optical Engineer at Global fiber optics / Mississauga and Optiwave Corporation/Ottawa.
In 2003-2008 she held faculty positions at the University of Technology and Koya University in Iraq, where managed an International project to establish Women Information Communication Technology (WICT) centers at Iraqi Universities.
Since 2008, she has been working as a Research Associate/ group manager at the Center for Research in Photonics at the University of Ottawa. Her work expertise is in the field of Silicon photonics, and nano photonics.
She has more than 25 publications, related to optical amplifiers, optical systems and silicon photonics

Optical information processing has traditionally been demonstrated using 3D free-space optical systems employing bulk optical components. These systems are bulky and unstable due to the stringent alignment tolerances that must be met. Taking advantage of the alignment accuracy offered by planar light circuits, these issues may be overcome by confining the light in a planar slab waveguide. The limitation on scaling, consequent on the loss of one dimension is offset by the nanoscale component footprints attainable in a silicon integration platform. A key component of this free-space-opticson- a-chip concept is a waveguide lens. Waveguide lenses are of general utility but our specific application is their use to implement the complex crossover interconnections of a switch fabric. The graded refractive index of the lens is engineered by patterning the silicon layer of silicon on insulator slab waveguides into a dense distribution of cylinders; either solid (silicon) or voids (air); using a single etch step. The cylinders have variable diameters and are placed on a regular square or hexagonal grid with sub-wavelength pitch. In the case of voids, the patterned silicon may be suspended in air to form the core of a symmetric slab waveguide. Solid cylinders must be supported by the Si02 layer leading to an asymmetric waveguide of reduced effective index range. Advantageously, the patterning of the metamaterial region within the slab-waveguide requires only a single etch step. Photonic wire feeder waveguides at different positions around the lens may be used to launch light into the lenses or collect light from the lenses. A method is developed to determine the local effective media index of a periodic metamaterial in terms of the parameters of its unit cell. This method is used as a calibration to lay out a metamaterial with graded parameters. The operation of a metamaterial Lüneburg lens telescope is verified by FDTD simulations and shown to be capable of near zero insertion loss and crosstalk. The careful approximation of the graded index of the Lüneburg lens by a metamaterial introduces minimal impairments.

This paper introduces a compact 90º optical hybrid, built on small size SOI waveguide technology .This optical hybrid is a critical component of a potentially low-cost coherent optical receiver design developed within the frame of our Optical Coherent Transmission for Access Network Extensions (OCTANE) project. In previous recent work, 90º optical hybrids were realized in SOI rib waveguide technology with 4 μm top silicon and a rib height of approximately 2 μm. In this paper, we introduce a compact 90º optical hybrid, built on small size SOI waveguide technology (1.5 μm SOI -based rib waveguide, with 0.8μm rib height). The proposed device consists of multimode interferometers (MMIs) connected in such a way that four different vector additions of a reference signal (local oscillator) and the signal to be detected are obtained. At the outputs, the hybrid provides four linear combination of the signal with the reference which differs by a relative phase shift of the reference of 90º. The four output signals are detected by a pair of balanced receivers to provide in-phase and quadrature (I&Q) channels. The phase differences arise naturally from the self imaging property of a MMI. The key elements of the 90º optical hybrid, including a 2×2 MMI, a 4×4 MMI, and polarization diversity configuration have been designed and simulated, using the numerical mode solving tool FIMMPROB. The 2×2 and 4×4 MMI had overall lengths of 701μm and 3712.5μm lengths respectively. Tapers are used to couple adiabatically single mode waveguides to the entrance and exit ports of the MMI to assure correct operation by avoiding coupling to the higher order transverse modes allowed at the entrance and exit ports of the MMI. The simulation results at 1550nm show polarization independence and phase errors between the ports of less than 0.03 degrees. Currently the design is in fabrication at the Canadian Photonics Fabrication Center with the support of CMC Microsystems and experimental results will be subject to a further report.
