31 October 1986 A Multilevel Approach to User-friendly Lens Design

Abstract
Even before the advent of computing technology, lens design was hardly a "user-friendly" activity. During the past decade, during which enormous computational power became widely available, this aspect of the process was seldom addressed -- and in the predominantly batch-mode environment that was common until the past few years, it reached its nadir. Now it is time for software vendors to reconsider the interaction of man and machine to a degree not previously attempted; widespread distribution of formidable computing power and the domination of interactive environments, together with hardware such as color graphic terminals, present new possibilities. We will outline the major directions of current research, and some of the possibilities for the future.
