Abstract
In the area of electronic intelligence (ELINT), one of the most demanding tasks to be performed in the battlefield is the determination of the emanation point of an intercepted electronic signal. Because this function has to be performed under battlefield conditions, an enormous amount of stress is placed on the intelligence officer. The result is suboptimal performance of the ELINT installation. One way of improving the situation is to provide the intelligence officer with a computer-based decision aid. This paper describes a knowledge-based system prototype of such a decision aid. In performing its function the system makes use of a directed-search strategy. The use of a search strategy represents a departure from, and in this case a better approach than, the more commonly used AI technique of hypothesis generation/testing. The search strategy is dictated by the fact that the dimensionality of the solution space is such that solutions cannot be "pre-canned" for later recalling as is typical of the hypothesis generation/ testing strategy. The absence of "pre-canned" solutions also imparts on the system the desirable property of graceful degradation.
