Abstract
The design and application of a custom IC (integrated circuit), developed to enhance an existing real-time image processing system, is described. The system is used to automatically monitor road traffic at a complex road junction, where data is acquired using a black and white video camera. The new custom IC forms part of a preprocessing circuit to remove binary noise from the image, and is particularly effective when used in conjunction with a technique for background updating [1], also described.
