20 September 1989 Development Of The Boeing Infrared Sensor (BIRS) Calibration Facility

Abstract
A large new calibration facility, designated BIRS, has been recently completed and made operational at the Boeing Kent Space Center near Seattle. Initially configured for calibration of the Army's Airborne Optical Adjunct (AOA) sensor, the facility has the capability to perform radiometric and goniometric calibrations of large infrared sensors under simulated operational conditions. It also has the potential for growth into other applications such as hardware-in-the-loop and seeker testing. In its present configuration, the BIRS facility provides environmental simulation for endoatmospheric sensors. The facility is designed for easy adaptation of the sensor chamber and optics chamber to simulate exoatmospheric environments as well. This paper will describe the development of this unique capability and will present aspects of the facility useful to the potential user.
