Abstract
Facing the absence of quality standards in the computer generated holography industry; we often see a wide range of quality levels in holograms. Accessibility to CG holography laboratories is still limited. This situation doesn’t help the artists who need to experiment and adapt their working process to the requirements and the particular features present in the current state of synthetic holography. Previous work afforded me the opportunity to perform Image Quality Analysis in the development of a computer-generated holographic imager, and to produce experimental large size artistic holograms. I will present in this paper some key elements and needs related to the optical and spatial characteristics of synthetic holograms that can insure high quality in holographic art. Topics such as level of detail, resolution, brightness and contrast, depth and field of view, distortions and defects, will be discussed as well as some content effects specific to synthetic holography such as kinetics and spatial synchronization. Holography, and especially synthetic holography, is a young field of research, in art as well as in science. Holography experiments in collaborative science and art are still strongly needed.
