Vladimir A. Burdin was born on February 01, 1953, in a military family in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR (USSR), which in 1956 removed to Leningrad (now Saint-Petersburg), and since 1961 lived in Kuibyshev (now Samara). After finishing secondary school, in 1971 Vladimir entered the Kuibyshevsky Electrotechnical Institute of Telecommunications (KEIT). In 1975, he graduated magna cum laude from KEIT with an engineer’s degree in multichannel telecommunications, and in the same year, he began to work as an assistant lecturer at KEIT Department of Communication Lines. In 1977 he entered the Ph.D. programme at Moscow Electrotechnical Institute of Telecommunications (MEIS – now it is Moscow Technical University and Informatics, Moscow). After graduating, he came back to KEIT and continued his lecturer assistant and associate scientist career at the Department of Communication Lines. In 1984 in MEIS Dissertation Committee Vladimir successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, “Research of single-coaxial communication links under hazardous effects of external electromagnetic field influence and development of their protection measures” and worked at the KEIT Department of Communication Lines as a senior lecturer. In 2000, he entered the post-doctorate programme in Povolzhskaya State Academy of Telecommunications and Informatics (PSATI – new status of KEIT, has been gained in 1998, while in 2008 until now, it is Povolzhskiy State University of Telecommunications and Informatics (PSUTI)). In 2002, Vladimir graduated in advance and defended his doctorate thesis, “Development of the theory of piece-wise regular fiber optic links and it’s applications for telecommunication networks” with flying colors in PSATI Dissertation Committee. In 2003, he received a doctorate of technical sciences degree and became a professor. From 2004 until 2018, he was a deputy head of PSATI Department of Communication Lines, while from 2018 until his death, he was a head of the Department. During this period, the PSATI/PSUTI Department of Communication Lines achieved leadership positions among the relevant departments in universities and institutes of the telecommunication industry in Russia. Professor Vladimir Burdin organized more than 20 courses in the branches of education “Telecommunication Links”, “Metrology and Measurements in Telecommunications”, “Fiber-Optic Telecommunication Links”, and others for the training of bachelors, masters, and engineers in telecommunications. He developed dozens of authors’ practical courses on fiber optic link installation and maintenance for the refreshing and retraining of engineers and technical specialists in telecommunications. Burdin V.A. prepared educational programs, textbooks, and training materials on “Design, Installation and Maintenance of Fiber Optic Telecommunication Links”, “Guided Systems and Passive Components of Fiber Optic Telecommunication Links”, “Fundamentals of Fiber Optic Link Maintenance”, “Technology of Fiber Optic Telecommunication Link Installation” and others. He trained more than 200 graduated certified specialists with bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and engineer’s in Telecommunications. From 2005 until 2008 professor Vladimir A. Burdin worked in PSATI as Vice-Rector for Distance Education. His management skills, combined with a powerful scientific-research technical base and especially his huge practical experience strongly appeared over his 2008 – 2018 years. At this time, he was PSUTI Vice-Rector for Science and Innovations: during this time, he powerfully contributed to the developmental advance in scientific and research activity as well as the training of highly qualified personnel of the University. Professor Vladimir A. Burdin is the founder of the scientific school, “Few-mode fiber optic technologies and their applications for telecommunication networks”, which operates successfully, unites young scientists from various universities in interregional collaborations, and carries out effectively research in the field of optical fiber few-mode regime applications over data and sensor networks. Professor Vladimir A. Burdin was a scientific advisor of 7 successfully defended Ph.D. and 1 Doctorate dissertations. He was a member of two Dissertation Committee. Since 2013 he served on the Expert Board of the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles under the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, Dept. of electronics, measurement technique and telecommunications. Professor Vladimir A. Burdin published more than 500 scientific papers, including one monograph, two textbooks, 15 study guides, stamped by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, over 50 patents, that applied effectively in practice during installation, maintenance and repair works of fiber optic cables on telecommunication networks, development of the remote fiber testing systems, design and renovation of corporate data network cable links. He is a SPIE and OSA Senior Member. Professor Vladimir A. Burdin is not only famous in Russia as a leading scientist, talented educator, and university top manager. He was one of the first high-level scientific-technical specialists in Russia, who successfully developed the branch of fiber optic technique in telecommunications in the Volga region. From 1994 to 2001, he worked as a consultant in Volga Regional Dept. of telecommunication company JSC “Rostelecom” during the installation of the long-haul Trans-Siberian fiber optic link “Moscow – Khabarovsk” over the area of the Volga Dept. responsibility. In 1992 he founded the research and development company “CommunicationAutomationMounting” (R&D Co “CAM”), and from 1992 till 2003 he headed it as Director-General. During this period, “CAM” took part in network installation for dozens Russian companies like JSC “Rostelecom”, JSC “Transtelecom”, JSC “Tatneft”, JSC “Megafon”, JSC “MTS”, JSC “IDGC”, JSC “VoTGC”, JSC “FGC”, JSC “Arctel”, JSC “Smarts” and others. Under his management, dozens of projects were successfully implemented on the installation and mounting of more than 2000 km of both underground and aerial fiber optic cables. Results of professor Burdin’s scientific research are widely used in practice in the cable industry, telecommunication companies, and scientific and educational info-communication institutions. They were included in three ratified guidance documents, stamped by the Russian Ministry of Telecommunications (45.180-2001, 45.190-2001, 45.211-2001), that regulate the installation and x maintenance of fiber optic telecommunication links. Being an invited lecturer, professor Vladimir A. Burdin has given numerous author’s courses and master classes. He was one of the organizers and leading technical specialists, who held the first workshop on fiber optic technique in telecommunications in 1992 in Republic Tatarstan in Chistopol telecommunication hub. Afterward, he gave subsequently lectures and master-classes during the workshops, been held at JSC “Tatneft” (Almetyevsk), JSC “Rostelecom” (Naberezhnye Chelny, Samara, Moscow), and JSC “VolgaTelecom” in various cities of Volga Region. Being an OSA and SPIE invited lecturer, he held author’s classes in the universities of Kazan and Ufa. Professor Vladimir A. Burdin was awarded three government honorary badges for his advanced achievements in telecommunications: “Honorable Employee of Science and Technique in Russia” (2008), “Master in Telecommunications” (2003), “Shock Worker of 12th Five Year Plan” (1990). He was awarded diplomas of Samara City Administration (2014), Russia Ministry of Telecommunications (2013), and Government of Samara Region (2007). In 2015 he was given the honorary title “Scientific School Founder” by the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, in 2016 – “Honored Worker of Telecommunications and Informatization of Samara region”, in 2020 – “Honored Worker of Telecommunications of Russian Federation”. Professor Vladimir A. Burdin was one of the leading scientific workshops and conference organizers. He was involved in program committee members and session chairs of known international and Russian scientific-technical conferences – “Physics and Technical Applications of Wave Processes”, “Problems in Telecommunication Technique and Technologies”, “Optical Fiber for Telecommunications in Russia”, “Optical Technologies for Telecommunications”, “All-Russian Conferences on Fiber Optics”, “Russian Fiber Lasers Workshop” and others. He was a staff member of the Editor Board of the scientific-technical journal “Infokommunikacionnye tehnologii” (Infocommunication Technologies) and the Editor of 21 SPIE Proceedings of “Optical Technologies for Telecommunications” and “Optical Fiber for Telecommunications in Russia” conferences from 2001 to 2021. Vladimir Burdin was a person of rare quality who will be sorely missed both for PSUTI and for the whole Russian science community. His name has a permanent place in the history of fiber optics in telecommunications and sensing technologies, and his contributions continue in the flourishing growth of knowledge presented and discussed in the annual fiber optics conferences. |
