Quantum well optical modulators and self-electrooptic-effect devices (SEEDs) offer practical technologies for the fabrication of large two-dimensional arrays of devices for optoelectronic switching and processing systems. They are also an attractive technology for the integration of large numbers of optical and electronic devices, which may allow new classes of processing systems that can take advantage of the best features of both optics and electronics.
