Abstract
In regional hyperthermia a selective overheating of the tumour region is applied in order to avoid a growth of the tumour or at least to sensitize the tumour against other types of therapy. Selective heating can be obtained using an electromagnetic field (f = 70...110MHz), which is focussed by an appropriately driven phased array antenna. In order to adjust and, so far as nessecary, improve the steering of the dipole phased array, the knowledge of the actual Specific Absorption Rate SAR= K l£l2 /(2 p) (K: conductivity, p: specific weight) distribution is essential. This can not be circumvented by temperature measurements at the cancer region, because the latter only provide spatially piecewise informations which additionally suffer from large time constants of temperature.
