Abstract
Visual table of contents provides users with easier access to imagery databases. Reduced resolution images are collected in a portfolio, presented to the user to browse through and select an image based on this thumbnail image. This avoids having to select an image from a list of file names. This paper shows the results of using Daubechies wavelets to produce the reduced resolution images and improvements to the selection process. An image is passed through a Daubechies wavelet several times to produce a four (4) to eight (8) time reduction. The low-pass vertical/low-pass horizontal sub band produces a thumbnail sketch. The remaining three sub bands are compressed with a standard lossless or lossy compression algorithm. Instead of selecting an entire image to retrieve at full resolution, the user can select the level of expansion required. This can be up to the entire image at full resolution. Providing the user with these options reduces the amount of imagery to decompress and to pass along the network.
