Abstract
The research and development of new defense systems is an expensive and time consuming process. The timescales and associated costs can be greatly reduced by the appropriate use of physically realistic synthetic visible and infrared imagery. Synthetic imagery does not directly replace the need for real trials data, rather it provides an effective means of increasing test data sets which can be used in conjunction with real imagery. This paper discusses the issues involved in generating physically realistic imagery as well as the balance between the use of synthetic imagery and real imagery during the research and development phases of defense programs. The discussion is based on a number of examples of defense programs that have successfully balanced the use of real and synthetic imagery, enabling a reduction in timescales and costs.
