Abstract
In this paper, we describe the architecture to integrate distributed multimedia real-time monitoring and control system with ATM network. It is constructed from scratch to take advantage of ATM AAL5 functionality and provide application-to-application QoS guarantees. In order to implement the application-to-application QoS guarantees, the architecture presents a mechanism to (1) provide efficient resource management for distributed real-time multimedia application and protocol processing, (2) minimize the overhead associated with data movement and context- switching. The major components of the architecture are (1) Resource Management Unit. It is responsible for efficient CPU scheduling, dynamic network bandwidth allocation, real- time buffer space reservation and other device management, (2) Connection Management Unit. It implements QoS negotiation and QoS translation among application QoS, system QoS and network QoS, it also fulfill admission control, (3) Data Transfer Unit. To move data efficiently, we develop the real-time thread concept and separate control and data path to manage the data transferring and avoid unnecessary data copying.
