17 March 1983 Background Suppression For Moving Point Source Detection

Abstract
In this paper a method of detecting point sources using phase only images is described. The method is adaptive, in the sense that it can be used to reduce the effects of clutter in situations for which the clutter statistics are unknown. Data to which this method may be applied include sampled time signals from a single detector, imaging systems composed of discrete elements, and successive frames of such images. An extension of the basic technique to multiple frames of data is discussed which allows detection of moving point sources. The method has the advantages that multi-dimensional signals can be filtered in several different formats, providing a choice of implementations, and that noise limiting behavior allows the use of a predetermined threshold, resulting in a known probability of false alarm.
