Abstract
Optical damage free periodically poled yttrium and iron doped lithium niobate crystals are used for holographic recording with image bearing beams. Phase holograms are recorded via photorefractive effect with the charge separation caused by the bulk photovoltaic effect. The recording with orthogonally polarized waves (one ordinary and other extraordinary) reduces strongly the undesirable nonlinearity of photorefractive response. A considerable improvement in reconstructed image quality is demonstrated as compared to homogeneously poled crystals, especially for holograms with the limited transverse cross section and high diffraction efficiency.
