Abstract
Passive microwave AMSR-E (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer) remote sensing data has been used to monitor the seasonal snow cover variations and for the snow cover characteristics studies. In the present study the spectral and temporal variation of brightness temperature using AMSR-E has been drawn and further scattering index is calculated which filters the snow cover extent information. The derived results are compared with optical (WiFS) data for the validation. Empirical relations of snow depth were developed for different ranges using AMSR-E brightness temperature and ground observatories data from different location of the Indian Himalaya. This snow depth information works as very useful input for avalanche forecast.
