We report our study of a novel motion estimation algorithm based on structure segmentation and compensability analysis, where the macroblocks in the prediction frames are classified into four types corresponding to stationary background (or stationary objects), uncovered background (or new objects), moving objects, and edges among them. Then the following motion estimation operation is only performed on the compensable macroblocks, and the motion interaction among neighboring macroblocks is further used for reducing the search range. Preliminary results indicate that this proposed technique not only reduces the estimation burden drastically but also avoids the discontinuous change of picture quality, thus resulting in improvements of the subjective picture quality in comparison with a normal fast search algorithm.
