Abstract
Traditionally, very high precision mechanical machining is performed using aerostatic or hydrostatic spindles. We describe a different approach, by making use of spindles with active magnetic bearings, which open up new prospects in this field. To test this principle, we have built a machine using a magnetic spindle for machining flat and cylindrical surfaces. Here, we give the results obtained and describe the possible prospects.
