Abstract
To effectively suppress the side lobe level of array antenna and to improve global optimization, an improved cultural genetic algorithm (ICGA) combined with a multi-population parallel algorithm was proposed in this paper. The novel algorithm used better acceptance function, influence function, and update function for the cultural algorithm (CA). Furthermore, instead of single population, a multi-population parallel algorithm was introduced to population space to achieve genetic evolution. This novel algorithm, multi-population cultural genetic algorithm (MPCGA), has stronger ability of globe search, effectively avoids trapping into local optimum, and significantly suppresses the premature convergence. MPCGA was applied to optimizing the phase of array antenna. For comparison, the well-known CA, GA, and ICGA were tested for optimization of the array antenna as well. The simulation results showed that MPCGA successfully achieved a good balance between the ability of global and local search, and higher convergence rate. While GA and ICGA lost their convergence for 100-element array simulations. The convergence curves for all algorithms tested in this work revealed that MPCGA had the best performance in minimize the antenna side lobe levels.
