A single half-wave retarder can be used to rotate the plane of polarization of a linearly polarized beam through any desired angle without any change in its intensity, but only with monochromatic light of the appropriate wavelength. We describe two simple combinations of birefringent retarders with a linear polarizer that can be used to produce a controllable rotation of the plane of polarization that is independent of the wavelength, with only minor variations in intensity.
