Rare earth substituted piezoelectric ceramics with the composition Pb_xRE_yTi_0.98Mn_0.02O₃, with RE = Pr, Pr+Eu, Gd+Nd, and a few percent of bismuth to partially substitute the lead, have been prepared by solid state reaction of oxide powders. Structural and morphological investigations were performed on the poled samples. The uses of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) have shown the domain structure and the formation of the tetragonal perovskite phase. A non-destructive analysis of the elemental distribution on the surface of the samples has been performed by the electron probe microanalyzer. Samples with diameter 10mm and thickness 1mm have been employed for electrical characterization. Material coefficients have been investigated as a function of temperature. The dielectric permittivity and resistivity were measured for wide temperature and frequency ranges. The Gd+Nd doped PT material has been used to realize a SAW transducer.
