Joan Serra-Sagristà received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Universitat Autònoma Barcelona (UAB), Catalonia, in 1999. He is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Information and Communications Engineering (DEIC) at UAB. From September 1997 to December 1998, he was at University of Bonn, Germany, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Catalan savings bank "La Caixa".
His current research interests focus on data compression, with applications mostly to remote sensing. He has co-authored over 160 publications. He serves or has served as, among others, Associate Editor (AE) for IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, AE for IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, SPIE Journal of Electronic Imaging and as Program Committee Chair for Data Compression Conference. He was the recipient of the Spanish Intensification Young Investigator Award in 2006.
He is the Director of the Group on Interactive Coding of Images (GICI) since its creation in 2003. He serves now as the Head of the Department of Information and Communications Engineering (DEIC).
