Profile Summary

Michael D. Young is the founder and principle lens designer for Young Optical Design. He specializes in lens design, commercial-off-the-shelf designs, novel designs, microscopy, and laser optics.

He is also a Sr. Research Associate for the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus (UCD) in the Gibson lab where he develops technologies for nonlinear imaging of brain tissue.

Before joining the Gibson group at UCD, Michael worked for Honeywell Quantum Solutions (HQS) as a Sr. Physicist where he received multiple awards for his optical systems designs for laser-beam delivery and trapped-ion imaging and detection.

He obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in engineering physics and applied physics, respectively. His dissertation was on “Developments in Multifocal Multiphoton Microscopy with Single Element Detection” which presented advances in enhanced resolution techniques using spatial frequency modulated imaging. These and additional advances were recognized with an outstanding paper award by SPIE.

He is a member of OPTICA (formerly the OSA), Colorado Photonic Industry Association (CPIA), and SPIE
