We present a novel inspection technique for cleaved optical fiber ends based on the Fabry-Perot resonator. The technique
uses mainly laser diodes, an optical power meter, 3-dB coupler, and XY lateral adjustment stage. It can be achieved more
easily than current imaging processing that uses a charge coupled device camera and video monitor. The inspected fiber
end is considered failed or successful depending on whether both the measured return losses from the fiber end at two
wavelengths are equal to ~14.7 dB. Experimentally obtained fiber end images were in good agreement with scanning
electron microscope observation images. Thus, the proposed technique provides a simple and cost-effective way to
inspect cleaved optical fiber ends.
