This course reviews the required radiometric calculations, properties of detectors, develops sensitivity equations for different situations, describes infrared optics, scanning systems and pertinent properties of materials. Several different applications are described to illustrate the design procedures: a night-driving system, an ICBM detector and a strip mapper.
This course is a continuation of Introduction to Infrared System Design (SC215). A strip mapper, a night-driving imager, helicopter pilot's aid, a collision-avoidance system, an ICBM detector and a surveillance system are designed. The steps are covered in detail so that the process and the components are discussed. In every case, alternative systems are developed and judgments made about the optimum. Although six systems are discussed, many more are included as alternatives.
