Profile Summary

Richard Holmes graduated from Caltech in Physics in 1981 with honors and received a Stanford Fellowship while pursuing a Ph.D. in Operations Research at Stanford University. He is a Fellow of The Optical Society and the Directed Energy Professional Society, and a Senior Member of the SPIE. He has 18 patents, 33 journal publications, over 57 conference papers in referreed proceedings and has contributed to or authored 2 books. He has served as a topical editor for the Journal of the Optical Society A. He served as the chief scientist for a division of Boeing from 2010 to April 2019. He founded two companies, Nutronics in 1995, and General Nutronics in 2001. The former was sold to nLIGHT, a NASDAQ-listed company, in 2019. The latter was a venture-funded Silicon Valley startup. He is noted for his contributions in stimulated Raman scattering, nonlinear optics, laser propagation in the atmosphere, laser beam control, and ultra-high-resolution imaging.
