SC011: Design of Efficient Illumination Systems
Illumination systems are included in fiber illuminators, projectors, and lithography systems. The design of an illumination system requires balancing uniformity, maximizing the collection efficiency from the source, and minimizing the size of the optical package. These choices are examined for systems using lightpipes, lens arrays, faceted optics, tailored edge rays designs, and integrating spheres through a combination of computer simulations, hardware demonstrations and discussions.
SC345: Light Source Modeling
The increasing power of illumination software has accentuated the demand for creating accurate source models. This course is an overview of source modeling techniques ranging from apodization of point sources to construction of sources using extended emitters to apodization using multiple CCD camera images. Emphasis is placed on incoherent sources including incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, high intensity discharge, and light emitting diodes. The use of optimization to fine tune source models is shown.
