Profile Summary

David Sampson is a consultant in innovation, optics and photonics, based in Perth, Western Australia. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Surrey and immediate-past Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research & Innovation.

David has been an elected director and adviser to the Board of Directors of the SPIE – The International Society for Optics & Photonics and chaired its Publications Committee. He has also chaired/been a member of many committees for the IEEE Photonics Society and Optica.

His research interests are in biophotonics and biomedical optics, primarily optical coherence tomography. He is the recipient of circa 50m AUD in career grant funding. His research has been recognised through various awards, including IEEE Distinguished Lecturer and he has given 100+ unpublished invited talks and 130+ plenary and invited talks at conferences. David has been a member of organisation/technical committees of 150+ conferences in optical telecommunications, photonics, optics, biomedical optics, biophotonics and microscopy, including chair/co-chair 12 times.

He has advised student chapters and been a travelling lecturer in Armenia, Poland, Russia and Ukraine. David was formerly with, and is a graduate of, the University of Western Australia, where he founded the Optical+Biomedical Engineering Laboratory.

David is an elected fellow of the AIMBE, IEEE, Optica, and SPIE.
